YMCA Mission
To put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all.
CHYSC Mission
"Helping individuals develop as swimmers and grow as people in a fun environment since 1961"
Philosophy
Our swim club program seeks to emphasize the enjoyment of swimming and the satisfaction that comes from doing your best. Improvement in areas of stroke mechanics, sportsmanship and character are stressed as the most meaningful victories. Each swimmer is provided with the best program that we can offer in an effort to help the swimmer have fun while striving to reach his or her full potential.
History
The Chapel Hill YMCA Swim Club was originally formed as the Chapel Hill Swim Club in 1961. The club originated in coordination with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as part of an effort to provide a competitive swimming opportunity for young people in the greater Chapel Hill area.
The Club grew up swimming at the University's Kessing Pool (a.k.a. Old Navy Pool) and renting space at the Chapel Hill Tennis Club. University staff served as the initial coaches for the Club through the mid-1970s. By the late 1970s, the Club was hiring its own coaching staff. Coincidentally, when the Chapel Hill-Carrboro YMCA opened in 1978, the Chapel Hill Swim Club began renting space at the YMCA. In 1986, the Club officially merged with the YMCA.
With this transition, the team became known as the Chapel Hill YMCA Swim Club, and the coaches were YMCA staff members. Over the decades, the swim club has produced numerous swimmers ranked and recognized on a national swimming level. The swim club has recognized six YMCA National championship performances and 67 individual state championship performances.
CHYSC is very proud of its history. The program has developed to provide opportunities for both the serious swimmer with high goals and to the recreational swimmer who simply wants to enjoy exercise and teamwork. The club is focused on developing and promoting positive character traits in addition to proper stroke mechanics, improvement and conditioning. Our hope is to reach all swimmers regardless of age or ability and touch their lives in a way that is meaningful and enjoyable.
